Tweet Mystery of Death brings plot tweets and turns
Denver - Kansas City Metro Area. - June 26, 2009 - On June 15th, the Tweet Mystery of Death became Twitter’s first live murder mystery — letting Twitter users follow nine characters to engage with the story and solve a series of crimes. The story, set in fictional Hollyweird, revolves around a conceited star named Dirk Rockwell (@dirkrockwell on Twitter). Rockwell’s part is written by Boston, Mass.-based writer Greg R. Fishbone. After Fishbone conceived of the experiment and shared it online, eight other professional writers agreed to participate. While most of the writers know each other, they haven’t met face to face.

The writers built a wiki to collaborate on the main story; from that, they developed a spreadsheet that cues each writer for plot points and clues for the six-week run of the experiment. Each week features a new crime and a new chance for players to solve a case. Winners will receive a Tweet Mystery of Death T-shirt and/or a signed copy of an author’s book. While characters won’t necessarily interact with followers, a Ning site has been created so players can see and subscribe to plot updates, ask questions of the authors, and share theories with each other (www.tweetmystery.com). This ning is a great tool for those who can’t follow individual character “tweets.”

“This was more fun than you can imagine,” says Jenn Bailey, an Overland Park, Kansas-based writer who writes the part of Miss Plupp, Dirk Rockwell’s assistant. “We’ve spent hours giggling and building in back story. At times we got rather carried away, but that’s what happens when you throw together a bunch of dangerously creative people. Each author was responsible for their own character, but we definitely collaborated.”

The other characters and their authors are: model Carissa Ainsley (Sue Ford, Olathe, Kan.); Lilli LeMue, an artist (Dawn Metcalf, Conn.); Phoenix MacAllister, hot-blooded rival to Dirk (Rhonda Stapleton, North Olmsted, Ohio); reporter Sam Marlowe (Colleen Ryckert Cook, Lenexa, Kan.); Coffee Boy, the set gofer (Lisha Cauthen, Kansas City, Mo.); Hanna Bleckter, a celebrity stalker (Jan Kozlowski, Southington, Conn.); and talent agent Alex Berkley (Mary Pierce, R.I.).
