- “A Pink Tie Affair”™ Raises More Than $300,000 for the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
DENVER – Nov. 9, 2009 – Denver was in its full pink splendor Saturday night as more than 800 guests wined, dined and celebrated at the annual “Pink Tie Affair,”™ all the while helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.
The event’s live and silent auctions – featuring items such as a pink diamond necklace, a trip to Las Vegas, dinner for six prepared by Denver firemen, to two tickets to a Denver Bronco football game and a ride on the team plane – raised more than $300,000 and was held at the downtown Sheraton Denver Hotel.

Michele Ostrander, executive director of the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, said that “this year’s Pink Tie Affair was one of the biggest and best yet. Even with the economic ups and downs we’ve all been experiencing lately, the caring and compassionate people of Colorado continue to give and to support this worthy cause.
“We had 200 more people attend this year than last and, most importantly, we raised $300,000,” she added.
Among the guest list were some of Denver’s most notable business people, philanthropists and personalities including: Sharon Magness Blake and Ernie Blake, Arlene and Don Johnson, Scott and Lori McInnis, Frances Owens, John Atencio and Scott Grimmett.
Rick and Michelle Winters won the Bronco’s auction package and will be jetting off to Kansas City in December.
Wendi Graper and Lori Shaw were co-chairs of the Pink Tie Affair. Amy and Pat Downing, co-founders of Tri for the Cure received the Ambassador Award and Hollen Ferrendelli spoke on behalf of survivors at the gala. Mark Koebrich and Kim Christiansen of 9News once again emceed the event.
Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from Pink Tie – and from the Komen Denver Race for the Cure® held in October – stay in the 12-county service area that the Denver Affiliate serves to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects. The remaining 25 percent goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund research.
